Bookouture expands editorial team and celebrates 50 million sales

Bookouture is expanding its editorial team with an internal promotion and three new hires.

Ellen Gleeson has been promoted from commissioning editor to associate publisher with immediate effect. Joining the publisher in 2017, Gleeson was praised for a ‘standout year of digital bestsellers including Kerry Wilkinson’s The Child in the Photo and Liz Eeles’ Secrets at the Last House Before the Sea.’

Jess Whitlum-Cooper will join the team as associate publisher on January 4th reporting to publishing director, Laura Deacon. Currently commissioning editor at Headline, Jess has published Kimberley McCreight, Olivia Beirne and Kate Field as well as working on Victoria Hislop’s publishing.

Jess said,

 ‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining Bookouture. I have long admired their innovative mindset and formidable list of authors, and I can’t wait to be part of such a creative, dynamic and forward-thinking team.’

Susannah Hamilton will join the team on November 22nd as commissioning editor reporting to associate publisher Isobel Akenhead. Susannah was previously at Corvus where she published authors S.W. Perry, Uzma Jalaluddin and Jennifer Hillier.

Susannah said,

‘Having just sold their 50 millionth ebook, Bookouture is clearly an incredibly exciting and dynamic place to work. The team have been so welcoming and the authors that Bookouture publish are fantastic. I can’t wait to get stuck in.’

Both Jess and Susannah will be commissioning widely across commercial genre fiction including crime, women’s fiction and historical.

Bookouture are also very excited to welcome Sarah Gunton who joined on 11th October as a Publishing Executive. She comes to Bookouture from educational publisher Twinkl and will be working from our Sheffield office. 

She said, 

‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining Bookouture – working in fiction publishing has always been my dream job, and I’m so excited to be starting my career with such a creative and dynamic publisher!’

Earlier this month, Bookouture announced that it had hit 50 million sales since the start of its life in November 2012.

Managing Director Jenny Geras said,

’50 million is an incredible number, which represents 9 years of consistent global growth. We couldn’t have achieved this without our brilliant authors or our amazing team, and the promotions and hires announced here will help to drive us towards the next 50!’
