While fans of blockbuster franchises are expecting big and good news at the CinemaCon, the fast of the Fast & Furious franchise received one bad news. Justin Lin, longtime director of the franchise, announced that he’s stepping down from directing Fast X, the upcoming tenth installment of the popular action saga. Check Lin’s statement down below:
“With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of FAST X, while remaining with the project as a producer. Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as a child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew, and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the FAST family.” — Justin Lin
Lin joined the franchise by directing the third installment, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, back in 2006. After that, he directed 2009’s Fast & Furious, 2011’s Fast Five, and 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. He was absent from the franchise during the seventh and eighth installments, which were directed by James Wan and F. Gary Gray, respectively. Lin returned to the franchise as a co-writer and director of the latest installment — F9, and he was set to direct Fast X and its sequel, which was set to conclude the franchise.
Lin announced that he’ll remain on the project as the producer, but Universal will need to act quickly to find a new director since the production of the movie has already begun. There are no talks about who could replace Lin. There were some mentions about David Leitch, who directed the spin-off movie Hobbs and Shaw, but he’s currently working on Fall Guy, a movie starring Ryan Gosling. James Wan is currently busy with the post-production of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but F. Gary Gray, who directed The Fate of the Furious, might be one of the possible choices. We are waiting for Universal’s work on this matter.
Fast X is set to be released on May 19, 2023. After that, the franchise is set to conclude with the eleventh installment which is set to arrive sometime in 2024.
