The final book in the New York Times best-selling Gwendy’s Button Box trilogy from Stephen King and Richard Chizmar.

When Gwendy Peterson was 12, a mysterious stranger named Richard Farris gave her a mysterious box for safekeeping. It offered treats and vintage coins, but it was dangerous. Pushing any of its seven colored buttons promised death and destruction. Years later, the button box entered Gwendy’s life again. A successful novelist and a rising political star, she was once again forced to deal with the temptation that box represented. Now, evil forces seek to possess the button box and it is up to Senator Gwendy Peterson to keep it from them at all costs. But where can you hide something from such powerful entities?

In Gwendy’s Final Task, “horror giants” (Publishers Weekly) Stephen King and Richard Chizmar take us on a journey from Castle Rock to another famous cursed Maine city to the MF-1 space station, where Gwendy must execute a secret mission to save the world. And, maybe, all worlds.

Whelp, I messed up. I didn’t realize this was the third Button Box audio. I listened to the first, Gwendy’s Button Box and loved it. When I saw this, I was so excited there was a second audio… only while listening it occurred to me I’d miss things, only I kept listened until I finally after spoilers, got up and researched…yep this as you know is the third and I missed, Gwendy’s Magic Feather.

If you haven’t listened to the first two, Gwendy’s Final Task does such a good job of recap and flashbacks that it will spoil the first two.

Suspenseful and twisted as Gwendy prepares to perform a task to save the world, the author’s share reflections of Gwendy’s life from her times with the box, her political career, parents and of course her encounters with the man in the hat, Richard Farris.

When we meet Gwendy this time she is a state senator and Ferris informs her the box which does good and evil is broken and must be stopped. The story was addictive, and I loved how the end was threaded with Gwendy’s childhood.

I will probably go back eventually and listen to the second audiobook, but dang, I am kicking myself. Did it diminish my enjoyment of the last installment? Nope. King and Chizmar took us on one heck of a ride….literally. We are traveling to a space station. So strap in, it’s a hell of a ride.

I love listening to Marin Ireland, and she was the perfect as the voice of Gwendy. Her male voices sound authentic as well. Listening to King’s books is always a pleasure.
