A new film is coming to mark the 35th anniversary of Hellraiser. It is a reboot of Barker’s cult horror film from 1987, which resulted in as many as nine sequels and the upcoming HBO series. The director of the new film is David Bruckner (The Night House), and the screenplay is signed by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. The story, in turn, is no less than David S. Goyer, who has already announced that the plot will be based on the novel The Hellbound Heart, which was also the inspiration for the original film.
In the novel, Barker first created the concept of sado-sexual Cenobites, the most famous of which is Pinhead. Clive Barker himself participated in the project as one of the producers. Other producers include Marc Toberoff, Goyer and Keith Levine.
Although the reboot is described as fairly faithful, but also evolved, it is obvious that there are some significant changes as well, given that the lead role is played by Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead. Along with her, the other main roles are played by: Odessa A’zion (Grand Army), Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Goran Visnjic (The Boys), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Adam Faison (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), Aoife Hinds Normal People) and Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049).
Interestingly, Barker’s participation in the project took place after a lawsuit that acquired U.S. franchise rights. He had only words of praise for the new film:
“Bruckner’s work pays homage to the first film and its mythology, but takes the plot to places where it has never been. This is a Hellraiser on a scale I just didn’t expect. David and his team have immersed themselves in the mythology of the story, but what excites me is their desire to respect the original even when they have revolutionized it for a new generation. ”
Behind the project are Spyglass Media Group and Hulu. The production has just been completed, and it was filmed in Belgrade and Great Britain. The film is currently in the post-production phase, and will arrive in Hulu sometime in 2022.
