Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie sold over 4.3 million tickets in 11 days since the opening on December 24th, earning around 50 million dollars or over 5.8 billion yen. The movie is even outperforming the last year’s top-earning movie Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time. Evangelion movie earned a total of 88 million dollars, while it generated around 42 million dollars in the first two weeks. In only three days, from December 24th to December 27th, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 earned around 23.5 million dollars and topped the Japanese box office.
The movie is being screened in 418 theatres around Japan and the first 5 million viewers got a special booklet Jujutsu Kaisen 0.5 Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. The booklet featured never-published pages – 9 of them – that didn’t appear in the movie or in the prequel manga story on which the movie is based. The movie plot is based on the original prequel story by Gege Akutami. MAPPA did the animation, TOHO is in charge of distribution, while the movie also got IMAX screenings.
The story is following Yuta Okkotsu, a nervous high school student who is going through turmoil because he keeps seeing the cursed ghost of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto. Yuta Okkotsu is voiced by Megumi Ogata, and Kana Hanazawa is voicing Rika Orimoto. It yet remains unknown when the movie will arrive in western theatres, while there is a possibility that the western fandom will have a chance to watch the movie before the end of 2022.
For now, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie is breaking the box office records in Japan, which hints at a prominent future for the Jujutsu Kaisen series and yet unannounced season 2, which hasn’t been confirmed or canceled by far. Judging by the popularity of the first season and the movie, as well as the growing number of manga readers buying into Jujutsu Kaisen, there should be another season for the series.
