The Seven Deadly Sins Watch Order: The Complete Guide (Anime and Movies)

  • by

The Seven Deadly Sins (Japanese: Nanatsu no Taizai) is a manga series written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki. The original manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from October 10, 2012 to March 25, 2020, and has been collected in 41 volumes. There were several other, spin-off manga series that accompanied the main story, as well as an ongoing sequel series titled Four Knights of the Apocalypse, also written and illustrated by Suzuki.

The Seven Deadly Sins have become quite a popular series as far as modern manga are concerned and that is why it has been adapted into an anime franchise, starting with the series’ first season on October 5, 2014. The anime franchise is rather complex, with several seasons, OVA episodes and specials, and movies, which is why we thought you might need a guide on how to watch the whole series. As usual, we are going to bring you a complete chronological watching order of the whole The Seven Deadly Sins anime series so you know how to approach the material.

After an initial introduction, we are going to list the material in the correct chronological watching order, so just follow our list and you’ll be good to go! Enjoy!

The Seven Deadly Sins Episodes and Movies

The structure of The Seven Deadly Sins anime franchise is quite complex. The franchise consists of the main anime series which has four seasons (the fourth is still ongoing), a special four-episode series that aired between seasons one and two, three OVA episodes (two that are part of season one and one that is part of season two), and two movies (one of which is still unreleased). The basic structure of the main anime narrative is as follows:

No.Season TitleEpisodesStart DateEnd Date1The Seven Deadly Sins24 (+ 2 OVA)October 5, 2014March 29, 2015N/AThe Seven Deadly Sins: Signs of Holy War4August 28, 2016September 18, 20162The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments24 (+ 1 OVA)January 13, 2018June 30, 20183The Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath of the Gods24October 9, 2019March 25, 20204.The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement24January 13, 2021Ongoing

Along with this, there are, as we said, two feature-length anime movies. The first, The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky, was released in 2018 and was generally well-received by the fans and the critics, despite his dubious canon status. The second movie, The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, was released on July 2, 2021.

Now, this is the basic structure of the whole series. In the next section, we are going to give you a precise chronological order for the whole series. The works are going to be listed in the proper chronological order, as we think they should be watched, so just follow the list and you’re going to be fine.

The Seven Deadly Sins Watch Order (Chronological)

The Seven Deadly Sins (Season 1)

The first season of the anime series ran from October 5, 2014 to March 29, 2015. It contained 24 episodes and 2 special OVA episodes that aired after the season was completed. The first season should be watched first, as there are no prequel stories so far. The OVA materials should be watched separately. Now, this is the season’s structure:

The Seven Deadly Sins: Signs of Holy War (Special)

Signs of Holy War is sometimes labeled as season 1.5. It contains only four episodes that aired from August 28, 2016 to September 18, 2016, so after the first season and its two OVA episodes, but before the second season of the anime. The special’s structure is as follows:

“Bandit Ban” (OVA)

1 (OVA1)“Bandit Ban”
Transcription: “Bandetto Ban” (Japanese: バンデット・バン)June 17, 2015

The first OVA is considered to be canon and although it doesn’t really do much for the main narrative, it should not be skipped. It aired on June 17, 2015 and is officially considered to be part of season one of the anime. The plot is as follows:

Somewhere in northern Britannia, Ban arrives at the Fairy King’s Forest in search of the Fountain of Youth. He quickly climbs up the large majestic tree, and ends up meeting a mysterious young girl whom he ignores initially.

He decides to ask her who she is, only to discover that she was the Guardian Saint protecting the fountain. Swiftly, she swings her hand and the winds blow Ban off the tree. However, Ban survives the fall and persistently continues to climb up again. He repeatedly climbs up and gets blown off, until both of them grows extremely annoyed. In order to obtain the fountain, Ban equips himself with his Nunchaku, leading Elaine to believe that he was planning to kill and steal like all other humans.

To her surprise, he quickly grabs the Fountain of Youth and begins drinking. But before he could even take a sip, Elaine manipulates the tree branches and immobilizes him by grabbing all of his limbs. She then persuades him that without the Fountain of Youth, the forest itself will die. Astonishingly, Ban replies straightforwardly, stating that he understands.

When Elaine decides to read his heart, she discovers that he really had the intentions of giving up. She releases him and the two begin to get to know each other. Ban tells her that the reason for stealing the fountain is to hope for something good to happen in his life.

In response, she replies saying that she already lived for over 700 years, protecting the cup in place of her brother, King, who abandoned her. Ban decides to show her his ale label collection and the two bonded over a span of 7 days. Suddenly, when Ban was away, she quietly whispers that she wished that he had come to steal her instead of the Fountain of Youth.

She was startled to discover Ban behind her, who had heard what she said, and realized that they both have similar thoughts and feelings. Out of the blue, a mysterious monster from the Demon Clan appears, burning the forest with its Purgatory Fire. Ban immediately confronts the monster after telling Elaine to escape with the fountain, and successfully robs one of its hearts.

Not realizing that it had more than one heart, he lets down his guard and as a result, both of them get severely injured by the monster. Both of them realize that the only way to survive was to drink the Fountain of Youth, which means that only one of them could live.

The two of them wanted each other to drink the fountain, hoping for their survival. In desperation, Elaine seemingly drinks the liquid, only to kiss Ban and deliver it to him directly. Ban immediately recovers from the injuries after consuming the liquid, and quickly defeats the monster in rage.

Before passing away, Elaine gives him the forest’s last seed and he repeats, Someday, I’ll definitely make you mine. Sadly, before he was able to finish the phrase, she was gone. Later on, somewhere within the Kingdom of Liones, Ban is judged and sentenced to death for his apparent sins of destroying the Fairy King’s Forest, taking the Fountain of Youth and killing the Guardian Saint.

As the captain of the guard asked Ban if he has any last words before execution, Ban told everyone present that he is no longer “Bandit Ban” and “Undead Ban” is now his name.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments (Season 2)

The second season of the anime, Revival of the Commandments, officially started on January 6, 2018 with the so-called “Nanatsu no Taizai Imashime no Fukkatsu -Joshō-” special, which is just a recap of season one (as there was a three-year pause between the seasons) and can be skipped (officially, it is considered to be episode 0). The first new episode aired on January 13, 2018 and the final episode aired on June 30, 2018. An additional OVA episode aired on November 16, 2018. The structure is as follows:

The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky (Movie)

Transcription: Nanatsu no Taizai: Tenkū no Torawarebito (Japanese: 劇場版 七つの大罪 天空の囚われ人)August 18, 2018

The movie was released after the anime’s second season, but before its OVA episode and season three. While its canon status is still under question, as well as its exact place in the timeline, we think it’s for the best to watch it between seasons two and three. The plot is as follows:

The story takes place in a time when humans and non-humans alike lived in the same society. The Kingdom of Liones was almost annihilated thanks to the evildoings of the Demon Clan, but were saved thanks to the efforts of the Kingdom’s third Princess, Elizabeth, and a band of strong yet terrible knights known as The Seven Deadly Sins.

With peace returning to the Kingdom of Liones following its near annihilation by the Demon Race, Elizabeth and The Seven Deadly Sins decide to celebrate the King’s birthday with numerous dishes being prepared in the Boar Hat tavern.

The Deadly Sins’ leader Meliodas and his talking pig companion Hawk search for Skyfish for a recipe, ending up above the clouds and in front of the Sky Palace after stumbling across a well in the nearby forest which they discover is a portal.

Living in the Sky Castle are a race of winged people known as the Celestials, descendants of the Goddess Race who hold watch over an Indura-type demon sealed in their land since the Ancient War’s end 3,000 years ago.

But when a group of demons calling themselves The Six Knights of Black attack the Celestials and release the Indura, forcing a Celestial youth named Solaad unintentionally bring Meliodas and Hawk to his people’s land while he left to find the legendary white pig ‘Oshiro’ whose power was used to seal the evil.

Solaad ends up meeting the other Deadly Sins, who mistook him for Meliodas due to their similar appearances, but manages to convince them to come with him while Meliodas went through a similar case of mistaken identity with the Celestials.

As The Seven Deadly Sins face the Six Knights of Black with support by the Celestials’ warriors, it is revealed that the Knights of Black’s leader Bellion is an upper-class demon who was denied membership into the Ten Commandments by Meliodas in the past.

Meliodas ends up being mortally injured by the Winged Sword, a sacred sword forged specifically to harm demons. But Solaad, trusting The Seven Deadly Sins’ insistence that Meliodas is a good person, removes the sword and revives Meliodas. Solaad then uses the Winged Sword and the combined power of his people, the Sins, and Elizabeth to destroy the Indura.

The Sins are hailed as heroes and celebrate with the Celestials before taking a Skyfish and returning to Liones on Hawk’s Mother, who is revealed to have been ‘Oshiro’ the entire time. Some time later, King is presented with the cooked Skyfish and is appalled by its horrible taste as Meliodas cooked it. Hawk decides to eat it for him and ends up assuming a Skyfish form to his shock.

Additional Notes: The second OVA episode, “Heroes Fun Time -Extra Stories Compilation-“, which aired on August 12, 2015 as part of season one, contains several short, funny episodes from the characters’ lives and can, essentially, be watched at any time; this is why we have not listed it separately in this section. The second movie, The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, is not listed here as it has yet to come out so we still don’t know where exactly it will fit into the chronology.

How many The Seven Deadly Sins movies are there?

There are currently two Seven Deadly Sins movies. The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky, premiered on August 18, 2018 in Japan and had a solid reception, while the new one, The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light, was released on July 2, 2021, in Japan.

Are The Seven Deadly Sins movies canon?

The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky is part of the anime canon, but it doesn’t really have anything to do with the main anime narrative. It is a standalone canon story and it should be treated as such. The new movie, Cursed by Light, is 100% canon and written by its original author. In addition, the events of the movie do not contradict or overlap the story, so you can consider it to be canon.
