Review by Stacey

If your child goes to school (UK) then at some point they are going to learn about the Vikings. My first encounter with them was in my history class in the first year of high school, but if I remember rightly my children learned about them at primary school.

The Vikings: Raiders, Traders and Adventurers is a non-fiction book that is not only educational but is also fun, appealing, and is written in an easy-to-understand manner, which in my experience helps a child to absorb the information.

Each page contains a subject relating to the Vikings, you have Loki on the side of the page giving little snippets of information, and across the bottom is a comic strip style section containing extra relevant information.

The book begins with an introduction to the Vikings and then explains about them worshipping and believing in Gods and Goddesses, plus dwarves, dragons, giants, etc. Children who love the Avengers movies will be interested to know where some of the characters come from in history and will be intrigued to learn about who these gods were and what they represented.

The book covers lots of subjects from the Vikings building longboats and setting sail to other lands, to their fighting, trading, and exploring. It also covers how the end of the Viking era came about.

This is an amazing book that holds a wealth of information within its pages. It is interesting, enjoyable, and will keep the reader entertained. It is illustrated with bright, colourful drawings that capture Viking life and give the words meaning.

If you have a child studying the Vikings or going to be doing it soon then this is the book to purchase.

Author Info

Marcia Williams began to develop her distinctive comic-book style at an early age: “When I was about ten and wrote home to my family from boarding school,” she says, “I never wrote normal letters. I tried to tell my family about what I was doing in a way that was more fun. Also, my parents didn’t let me read comic books, so I decided to create my own.”

Marcia Williams travelled extensively as a child and was educated in Sussex, England, and Switzerland. During her varied career she has worked as an interior designer and has assisted cartoon artist and designer Gerald Scarfe in making papier-mâché and cloth sculptures.
