The dōjutsu of the world of Naruto are unique “eye techniques” that grant the user additional powers and make them more powerful in battle. As of now, there are 10 manga canon dōjutsu, two anime-only dōjutsu, and one non-canon dōjutsu, amounting to a total of 13 known dōjutsu.
This article is going to focus on one specific dōjutsu, the Jōgan, which was first introduced in the Boruto series. You are going to find out what it does and how its powers manifest, as well as when and how Boruto got the Jōgan and mastered its use. We’re also going to compare it to some other dōjutsu from the franchise.
What Is Boruto’s Jōgan?
The Jōgan is one of the known dōjutsu techniques. It debuted in the Boruto series and it was described as a unique technique inherent to the Ōtsutsuki Clan.
The Ōtsutsuki clan is, for those of you that are not overly familiar with the structure of Naruto’s characters, an ancient alien clan. Its members are often referred to as “Heavenly Beings” or “Divine Beings”. Their planet of origin is not known, however, we know that it is the first real clan strictly speaking.
On an unknown date, some members of the clan arrived on Earth and began to influence the blue planet, in particular with the diffusion of the chakra, which marked the beginning of the Shinobi era.
A millennium after the sealing of Jūbi, the Ōtsutsuki reappear three times on Earth:
during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Kaguya is resurrected, but she is defeated by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, the respective reincarnations of Asura and Indra, the two sons of Hagoromo. Kakashi Hatake, Sakura Haruno, and Obito also participated. two years later, the last surviving Ōtsutsuki on the Moon, Toneri, who is from the parallel branch and therefore believes in the wish of Hamura who, in fact, is not one, decides to destroy the Earth, but he is arrested. by Naruto. ten years later, in Boruto, Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki appear in an attempt to obtain the fruit of the Divine Tree, but they are stopped by Naruto, Sasuke, and Boruto Uzumaki (the five Kages also participated).
Now, the Ōtsutsuki Clan is famous for being able to control a lot of different dōjutsu, so it should not come as a surprise that the enigmatic Jōgan is also on that list.
What Are the abilities of the Jōgan?
The Jōgan is still a largely enigmatic dōjutsu, mainly because it has appeared relatively recently – in the Boruto series – and there still hasn’t been enough time for it to establish its presence in the franchise. Still, there are some things we know about the Jōgan and its abilities.
In the anime and the manga, before Boruto seemingly gained control of the technique, the eye was activated independently in the presence of dangerous, hidden, or evil targets. The Jōgan is capable of perceiving the flow of chakra, allowing Boruto to observe the visible changes in an individual’s chakra and also trace it through.
Also, in Boruto it had an effect causing an increase in vision and speed, it is also able to observe the Chakra Circulation System and determine a key point in it, in addition to showing the ability to see through the invisible barriers that connect between dimensions.
How Did Boruto Get the Jōgan?
The manga and the anime haven’t still explained how Boruto actually got the Jōgan, which is interesting, since it’s a technique inherent solely to the Ōtsutsuki Clan, and Boruto is not a direct descendant of the Clan.
Now, Toneri Ōtsutsuki might have helped Boruto activate the technique via a prophetic dream, but it is heavily suggested that he only accelerated the procedure, meaning that Boruto was able to use the Jōgan naturally, albeit it would have taken him some time to do so.
So, how does Boruto master a technique of the Ōtsutsuki Clan? We don’t know exactly, but there is a very plausible explanation that might account for this phenomenon.
Namely, Boruto’s mother, Hinata Hyuga, is a direct descendant of Hamura Ōtsutsuki and received his chakra in Naruto: The Last Movie. Hamura’s chakra, as we have already seen, is essential for the activation or destruction of the Tenseingan.
In order to do activate the Tenseigan one has to combine Ōtsutsuki chakra with a pureblood Hyuga chakra, which has been met in Hinata.
So theoretically, Hinata is able to activate the Tenseigan, a technique powerful enough to destroy and rebuild the Moon. And while chakra cannot be inherited in most cases, Hamura Ōtsutsuki’s chakra is an exception. There is a running theory that Hamura’s chakra has been passed down to generations in the Ōtsutsuki and Hyuga clans.
Another important fact is that Naruto, Boruto’s father, is a reincarnation of Ashura Ōtsutsuki. He also received his chakra from Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki and has chakra of all the tailed beasts inside him. Along with that, his life force is extremely strong thanks to his Uzumaki lineage.
So, basically, he and Hinata could have passed their immensely powerful genes over to Boruto, which makes sense if you look at it. This passing of genes has been seen in all Kyuubi Jinchurikis and their offspring, so it’s applicable here; especially in the case of Kushina Uzumaki and her descendants, i.e., Naruto and Boruto.
An example would be the whiskers on Boruto and Himmawari’s faces.
Whether our theory is true or not remains to be seen, but all these facts could account for Boruto being able to use the technique and we’ll just have to see whether our theory turns out to be correct or not.
What Episode Does Boruto Get the Jōgan In?
Boruto actually has the Jōgan since episode one, but the scene was set in the future so it’s quite difficult to determine the exact moment. He was later shown to use it in several episodes, but you can easily say that he got it in the first episode of the Boruto anime.
How Did Boruto Awaken the Jōgan?
The Jōgan, as we now know, is a very special technique that Toneri Ōtsutsuki helped Boruto awaken and become aware of by imparting a prophetic dream onto him, but as we have theorized above, Boruto always had the potential to awaken the Jōgan naturally; it just would have taken him more time. So, how did he manage to do it so quickly with Toneri’s help? Let us explain.
From what we can infer now, the Jōgan eye will be extremely important in the future of the series as Boruto has been prophesied by Toneri to be the one who would shoulder the fate of the world and become the one who stands at the zenith of power above all the shinobi and the Ōtsutsuki Clan, with the power of his technique.
In the anime, which is notoriously known for not following the manga, Urashiki Ōtsutsuki also stated that Boruto would become a threat to the Ōtsutsuki Clan in the future, which is in line with Toneri’s prophecy.
The third Boruto novel additionally revealed the reason why Toneri helped Boruto to awaken the Jōgan. It was because Toneri could foresee the future in which Boruto Uzumaki would play a vital role in the events that would have an essential impact on the future.
There is, though, an additional reason for Toneri’s intervention. Namely, he was was, despite being aware of the existence of Nue, unable to directly intervene because he was afraid he would attract the Ōtsutsuki Clan to Earth, which is why he was ultimately forced to help resolve the incident through indirect means.
That is the reason why Toneri spoke to Boruto through the afore-mentioned prophetic dream.
Toneri’s ultimate goal was to make Boruto become aware of his special power, the one hidden in his right eye, by warning him that he would one day have to decide the fate of the world with that eye, and that it would guide him to the light that would disperse the upcoming darkness.
But at the same time, he was trying to avoid the Ōtsutsuki becoming aware of this fact. The latter did not succeed, ultimately, because the main family of the Ōtsutsuki became aware of this fact
What Episode Does Boruto Use the Jōgan In?
The first episode we see Boruto use the Jōgan in was actually the first episode of the Boruto anime, titled “Boruto Uzumaki!!”. The episode premiered on April 5, 2017 in Japan, and it showed Boruto using the technique in the first scene, set in the future.
What Episode Does Boruto Learn to Control the Jōgan In?
Initially, while he was a kid and a pupil at the Academy, Boruto wasn’t able to control the technique at will. It appeared and disappeared, but Boruto couldn’t really do much to control it.
Later on, though, as a teenager, he was shown to be able to fully control the Jōgan; the exact moment he mastered it was not revealed so we’ll probably have to wait for a filler episode or a flashback scene that will reveal the exact moment to us.
Who Knows About Boruto’s Jōgan?
Unlike many, the first enemy that has managed to see this dōjutsu active in combat is the same Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki who while he was in his subconscious after dying, he mentioned to Boruto that one day those eyes (referring to the Jōgan in his eye ) everything he loves would be taken away from him.
Another important fact about the Jōgan is revealed in the fight against Urashiki Ōtsutsuki, who mentions that said Dōjutsu in particular for the members of his clan is a rather problematic eye, due to its ability to detect interdimensional portals and predict where it will come out.
The opponent who uses these portals to attack, which was seen in the anime during his meeting with Boruto and Shinki, Gaara’s adopted son, as they tried to protect the tailed beast, Shukaku from him and take him to Konoha to protect him from Urashiki.
It is debated whether Sasuke knows about this technique, based on a replica from Boruto episode 66, but we don’t think that Sasuke actually knows that Boruto’s ability is a dōjutsu and he almost certainly doesn’t know what it’s called.
Is the Jōgan Stronger Than the Rinnegan?
As far as the comparisons are concerned, due to the fact that we know very little about the Jōgan, it’s quite difficult to give a full and complete answer as to which eye technique is stronger. Still, we can give some probable estimates based on what we know.
In the case of the immensely powerful Rinnegan, the situation is somewhat clear, based on what we know so far. Namely, the Rinnegan is the most powerful of the three great eyes.
It offers its owner the use of all the alterations of the properties of the chakra and the possibility of using six different types of power: the puppeteer technique, a special version of the recall technique, the reading of the mind, the absorption of any magical technique, the ability to resurrect the dead and the control of gravitational fields, each associated with one of the six worlds of Buddhism.
On top of that, the Rinnegan gives the user the potential to learn all other shinobi techniques, as well as the powerful ability to summon the Diabolic Statue.
We have elaborated on the Jōgan above, so we won’t be repeating that.
Now, based on what we know about the two techniques, the Rinnegan is undoubtedly the stronger technique of the two. It is clearly more powerful and it gives the user a lot more abilities than the Jōgan, including the ones that the Jōgan gives. This is why the Rinnegan is more powerful than the Jōgan.
Is the Jōgan Stronger than the Byakugan?
Now, the Byakugan is a bit tougher to compare. First of all, it is also a technique inherent to the Ōtsutsuki Clan, like the Jōgan. The two even manifest in a very similar way. Secondly, the Byakugan and the Jōgan have very similar abilities, which makes it somewhat difficult to produce a precise answer.
The Byakugan allows the user to look “beyond things”, crossing any obstacle with a simple gaze, to identify the flow of the chakra anywhere and the vanishing points at the same time, and to possess an almost 359° vision.
This technique was used in the development of the innate Juken style, through which one can attack the circulatory system of the chakra, emitting it into the opponent’s body. The Byakugan is a capacity closely connected with the ninja’s eyes which, at the time of use, take on a real pearly color, with a subsequent dilation of the blood vessels on the temples.
As you can see, the similarities between the Jōgan and the Byakugan are quite obvious, which makes it difficult to draw a precise conclusion, especially since we don’t know much about the Jōgan yet.
And it is exactly because of that, that the Byakugan is, at the moment, a stronger technique than the Jōgan, but that might change in the near future, depending on how Boruto evolves as a show.
