Resident Evil is one of the most beloved video game franchises of all time because of how popular and unique its storyline is. Due to its popularity, Resident Evil became a movie franchise that spanned multiple films. The first six live-action films were loosely based on the game, but their stories were all original.
But because they needed the movies to stay true to the source, Resident Evil got a reboot in the film called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The new film promises to stay closer to the source, which is the games themselves. So, where can you watch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City?
Where To Watch Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City
One of the fixtures in the video game industry since the 90s has been Resident Evil. Because of how popular the game was, it became a live-action film franchise that spanned six movies all happening in the same universe. However, the Resident Evil film franchise got a reboot in the form of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
However, if you want to watch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the only place where you can watch it as of this writing is the theater nearest to you. That’s right. More and more movies are now being released in theaters after the movie industry suffered the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year.
One of the films that could have been released in streaming services had the pandemic extended its more serious effects is Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But because the economy has become quite open during the latter portion of 2021 thanks to the high rate of vaccination and the lower rate of infections, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was released in theaters and is yet to become available on any streaming service.
Originally, the film was supposed to be released in theaters in September of this year. The effects of the pandemic forced the release date back to October until it finally became available in theaters on November 24.
When Is Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Coming To Streaming?
As mentioned, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is only available in theaters as of this writing and since its release on November 24, 2021. This means that it is yet to be made available on streaming websites due to the obvious reason that the production company, Sony Pictures, does not want the streaming sites to compete with the theaters.
Given the fact that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is only available in theaters as of this writing, does that mean that it won’t be shown on any streaming service? Not exactly. There is a good chance that it will be made available on some of the biggest streaming services today. However, there has not been anything confirmed by Sony Pictures as of this writing.
Unlike other films that were released in theaters during the pandemic and were announced to have digital release dates as early as before the theatrical release, Sony Pictures is yet to say anything about Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’s digital release date. There is no confirmation as to when it will be available on streaming websites, given the fact that Sony Pictures has been silent about it.
In short, we don’t know when Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be released on any streaming website. However, we may be able to estimate when it will become available digitally on some of the most popular streaming services the market has to offer.
For example, Shang-Chi was made available internationally on September 1, 2021. While most of Marvel’s films take at least half a year to make their way to streaming services or become available for digital purchase, Shang-Chi became available on Disney+ on November 12, 2021, just over two months after its release date.
Another good example is Venom: Let There Be Carnage because it is also distributed by Sony Pictures, just like Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, had its theatrical release on October 1, 2021. However, it received a home media release during the final week of November 2021 and is now available for streaming.
From there, we can possibly estimate how long before Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City becomes available on streaming services. If we were to use Venom: Let There Be Carnage as a barometer, we might be able to catch the new Resident Evil film on streaming services as early as six weeks after its theatrical release date, and that could be somewhere around the first or second week of January 2022.
Still, it will depend on how well it does in the box office. It isn’t rare for certain movies to flop in the box office in the middle of the unpredictable times we live in. While there are plenty of Resident Evil and action-horror fans out there, it is tough to say whether or not the film will perform as well as Shang-Chi or Venom did during their theatrical releases.
So, if Sony Pictures decides that it would be best for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City to become available for streaming to augment the profits from the box office, we could probably catch it on streaming services in a few weeks, similar to Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
However, it would be fun to see what the new Resident Evil film has in store for those faithful to the story of the games and not to the original storyline that came with the first six live-action films. Welcome to Raccoon City is said to have a plot that is based on the first two games, which featured the mainstay characters Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Leon Kennedy.
But, because we could neither confirm nor deny the exact streaming release date of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, here is the official trailer that you can check out if you want to know more about what this film is about before you catch it on your favorite streaming service:
Will Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Be On Netflix?
As previously mentioned, there is no clear timeline or even confirmation regarding Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’s availability for streaming. That means that there is no confirmation regarding it appearing on Netflix, which is the leader in the industry when it comes to on-demand streaming services.
However, we can still speculate whether or not it may come to Netflix. That is because Sony had previously made a deal with Netflix that it will bring a lot of its content over to them. For example, Spider-Man and the other Sony-owned Marvel movies will appear on Netflix. But we are talking about Spider-Man and Marvel movies and all of the other 2022 films that Sony will be releasing.
As such, because Resident Evil is neither Disney nor Marvel but is still owned by Sony, we cannot say for sure if it is included among those films that Sony will be releasing on Netflix. So, with that said, there is a good reason to believe that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be on Netflix. But that may be years from now.
Will Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Be On HBO Max?
HBO Max has become quite popular when it comes to Warner Bros. films and other shows. However, because Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is not owned by Warner Bros. and is actually owned by Sony, there is no reason to believe that HBO Max will be able to acquire the rights to stream it. So, if you own an HBO Max subscription, you better luck next time because only Warner Media films appear on HBO Max, similar to how only Disney films and shows appear on Disney+.
Will Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Be On Amazon Prime?
Similar to what we said about Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City not being on Netflix but may soon appear on it, there is a good reason to believe that it may appear on Amazon Prime one day. That’s because the original Resident Evil film is actually available on Prime Video. However, we might see it on Amazon Prime after it shows on Netflix.
Will Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Be On Hulu?
Hulu is on the same boat that Amazon Prime is in relation to Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. That means that Hulu also has a few Resident Evil films in its library such as the first and second films of the original Resident Evil live-action movie universe.
However, it might take a while for Welcome to Raccoon City to appear on Hulu, given the fact that Netflix and other streaming services might be first in line when it comes to the rights of this film. But that doesn’t mean that Hulu may not show Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City one day. It might not be soon but it can surely happen sometime in the future.
