Warner Bros and DC have so many projects in development for the next two years. One of them is the first-ever Blue Beetle movie. Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña was cast as the titular character last year, and Angel Manuel Soto signed to direct. Although it was announced as the HBOMax exclusive, last month it was announced that the movie will have a regular theatrical release, and WB announced that the movie will be released on August 18, 2023.
Maridueña first talked about the Blue Beetle movie on DC FanDome last October, where the first concept art was revealed. The movie is still in pre-production, so it’s still too early to see the official first look at the titular character in the suit, but Maridueña now revealed that he already tried the suit on, sharing his excitement for the start of production soon.
“We’ve done two suit fittings. They’re hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I’ve seen the suit, and it looks awesome. […] Honestly, it feels like I’ve skipped a few stepping stones. “Cobra Kai” has been such a wonderful opportunity, (and) it feels a little bit intimidating being this is my first movie and it’s in a realm that’s totally different than anything I’ve ever worked on. I’m nervous, but I’m excited. It’s gonna be important, not only for Latinos and to see people of color, brown people, represented onscreen, but also show a story that we haven’t really seen before.” — Xolo Maridueña for USA Today
Last October, both Batgirl and Blue Beetle movies were presented as HBOMax exclusives. Although it was later announced that Blue Beetle will have a regular theatrical release, Batgirl is still set to be an exclusive for the streaming service. Batgirl started production recently and it’s set to be released on HBOMax by the end of this year, while Blue Beetle will start production soon, and it will be released on August 18, 2023.
