Zoë Kravitz Says ‘The Batman’ Will Show Catwoman’s Origin Story

  • by

Caped Crusader is set to return to the big screen next year. Highly anticipated Matt Reeves’ movie The Batman will mark the beginning of another Batman franchise, set outside of DCEU. Robert Pattinson is playing the world’s greatest detective, and Zoë Kravitz is set to portray Selina Kyle, widely known as Catwoman.

Catwoman is one of the most known and most recognizable characters in Batman mythos. The character exists almost as long as Batman himself. Ever since she was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1940, Catwoman had a lot of complicated relationships with The Dark Knight. Sometimes they were enemies, sometimes allies, sometimes lovers.

Michelle Pfeiffer played Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, and many fans still consider her as the best incarnation of the character. The movie showed a quick origin story of how Selina turned into a Catwoman. Halle Berry played Catwoman in the 2004 solo movie but, even if we ignore the fact that it’s one of the worst superhero movies ever, Berry’s Catwoman was Patience Phillips, not Selina Kyle. Anne Hathaway portrayed Selina Kyle, who was never called Catwoman for some reason, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. That movie didn’t show us the origin story, only explained it roughly through dialogues.

Now, Zoë Kravitz is all set to play Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Fans have reasons to be excited because everything we’ve heard and see in the trailers so far is promising a very good new incarnation of this famous character. Based on reports from test screenings, Kravitz’s performance and her on-screen chemistry with Pattinson could be one of the highlights of the movie.

While it was announced that the movie will follow younger Bruce Wayne, who is only in his second year of fighting crime, Kravitz now revealed that the movie also serves as the origin story of Catwoman.

“This is an origin story for Selina. So, it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive. I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale.” — Zoë Kravitz for Empire Magazine

The Batman is the first film of the planned trilogy. Directed by Matt Reeves, and starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, the movie will hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
